No Mistakes

Filed under: Patty Smyth — Lauren @ 4:01 am

Wtf, I could have sworn that was Don Henley in the background.

I’ve been told I sound like Tori Amos, Jewel, Stevie Nicks, Susannah Hoffs.   But if I could choose I wish I could sound like Patty Smyth.   She is the one & only female whose voice I have ever “fallen in love” with.

Euphoria Morning

Filed under: Chris Cornell — Lauren @ 3:07 am

Every time I find out that someone I know isn’t familiar with Chris Cornell’s Euphoria Morning I’m shocked.   It isn’t that I think Chris Cornell should be everyone’s favorite male vocalist (Well.   He should.) or that everyone should know his entire discography (But they should.).   Ok, maybe it is.   It surprises me that people can know about Soundgarden & Audioslave & not know about Mr. Cornell’s intermediary solo album.   Euphoria Morning is probably one of my favorite CDs, & given the opportunity to have 3 of my CDs turned into vinyl with vinyl-quality sound, Euphoria Morning would definitely be one of my choices.

Back in the 90s Rob Seto, my Jelly’s music guru, recommended Temple Of The Dog (Soundgarden-Mother Love Bone collaboration) & Chris Cornell, in “Call Me A Dog,” became my new favorite male vocalist, & has remained so since.   I’d like to add that I didn’t find out what he looked like (Extremely.   Hot.) for years afterward.   There was just something about the way his voice lazily shifted in the word “as” in the line “It doesn’t bother me as long as you know…”   I’m serious.   That’s where it was at for me.   Sometimes when you hear something like that it’s best to never find out what the singer looks like.   But in this case I lucked out.

AudiPod??

Filed under: Twinkage — Lauren @ 9:30 pm

I bought a new iPod a few days ago.   My first generation 15GB had been slowly deteriorating after 4 years of mostly hanging out in my bag, since I became snobby about mp3s.   The years of non-use, I think, had done it in.   The big clincher was that when I decided I wanted to use it, I couldn’t remember where I put it.

Meh, time to get a new one.

Journey to Apple Store online.   Four years ago I had walked into the Ala Moana Apple Store’s grand opening & seen mp3 players that were just like how I had pictured mp3 players being, & I dropped $700 to get one for myself & one for the bf.   And there began my love affair with The Ideal MP3 Player, complete with eventual complacence, boredom, & yearning for other things (actual CDs, SACDs).   Just like in a real relationship.

I’d never used the full 15GB on my Classic, even when I’d loaded WAV files into it.   The bulk of my music collection is there on that humangous CD rack & the smaller racks next to it — not on my hard drive.   My hard drive is for GAMES, bitches.   GAMES.

Umbrella, Ella, Ella

Filed under: Man, this is RUBBISH — Lauren @ 1:36 am

Anyone who even remotely knows me knows I have somewhat firm ideas about music. Firm? Maybe even myopic.

I grew up listening to Olivia Newton-John, Jim Croce, & The Eagles. The first song I ever tried to play on my dad’s guitar was The Beatles’ “Michelle” (heh, major failure). The first concert I ever saw was Rick Springfield, the best concert I ever saw was Jane’s Addiction & the first song I ever spent a week learning to play from tabs was Metallica’s “Fade To Black.” My favorite artist is Jonatha Brooke, my favorite male vocalist is Chris Cornell & my favorite female vocalist is Patty Smyth.

So imagine the pause when a guitarist asked me to learn Rihanna’s R&B song, “Umbrella.”

The Happy Phantom

Filed under: Tori Amos — Lauren @ 10:24 am

One fine day in the early 90s I was browsing music in Jelly’s when my dear friend Silke produced Tori Amos’ Crucify EP, recommending I buy it & vowing that she would buy it from me if I decided I didn’t like it.

I had never heard of Tori Amos but I trusted Silke, so I bought it.   The Crucify EP is basically 2 of her originals, “Crucify” & “Winter,” which had just been published on Little Earthquakes, & 3 piano-accompanied covers of the Stones’ “Angie,” Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” & Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You.”

Within days I became a lifelong Tori Amos fan.   I purchased Little Earthquakes & fell further in love.   I won’t bore you with the rest, which, as they say, is history.

If I Die Today

I can at least say that I had a shitload of blogs.

The infamous O-Dogg has his O-Blogg on WordPress, so I thought I would come & check it out as well.   I kind of like the fact that WordPress has a little noobie button for an expandable post separator.   At Blogger we have to actually mess with the HTML.   Normally I prefer to figure out the HTML, except in cases where I have tried & failed.   The Blogger situation is one of those.   So anyway, let’s try this out.

I suppose, unlike The Long Way Home, this blog should have a purpose.   And while the same can be said of my life, basically, if you asked me what colors & shapes my life wends itself around, chances are everything I could tell you would come back down to music.   Now there’s a subject I can talk (write) for endless hours about.

Even more fun, maybe I can get some of my music-minded friends to write with me.   Hm.   This might be fun.
