Karaoke Review 01-25
It was a pretty loud night.
Starr planned a Girls Gone Singing night. Unfortunately for the plan, various invited females couldn’t make it. This worked out perfectly for me, since really all I wanted was to hear Starr & Miss J sing.
The party started at 8, fueled by some new karaoke I’d recently picked up. I’d brought Dishwalla’s “Angels & Devils” for Mele to sing, but Miss J had me sing it right away since he wasn’t coming in until later. Starr opened with a very well executed “These Are Days,” trying out karaoke without liquor for the first time.
Starr is due in July. We wanted to have some singing before her diaphragm gets all… you know.

Unbeautiful
O-Dogg decided it was time for me to listen to something other than Nothing’s Shocking for a little while, & surprised me with a CD from a 22-year-old Irish girl named Lesley Roy with a unique gravelly sound & a vocal range that can best be described as “ludicrous.” I trust O-Dogg. I popped it into my car CD player the next day.
Lesley Roy has a single out that recently made it to Hawaii. It’s already become popular enough (in parts of the world that get their new music when it’s still new) to be published in karaoke format by Pop Hits Monthly. Yes, I have it already. No, I don’t think I can sing it. But I have friends who can.
The only time I listen to the radio is Saturdays, when I’m in my mom’s car where Jane’s Addiction is not sufficiently appreciated. So I listen to O-Dogg on 93.1, intermittently texting him snide remarks about various songs & getting back his agonized remonstrances or trivia tidbits.
On my radio show I’d play… well, you can probably guess what kind of stuff I’d play.

Karaoke Review 01-18

The night started off with T feeling like crap because he’s got a bad cold. We pretended, as we pretend every week, that this Sunday might be mellow & quiet & once some of our friends got in T could go take a much needed nap in his car.
The place was empty until the Tone Deaf Regulars walked in, all smiles & personality. Although they torture my ears, I like these people. They’re simply nice.
Pleasantly enough, they had brought a couple of new (to me) faces, & one of these new faces was actually a singer. It was his birthday, & he started off with the Cult’s “Rise” & afterward as I checked on their drinks I remarked, “You should bring him more often.”

Karaoke Review 01-11
It’s time that I start recording stuff again.
Not because I’m worried that my pitch is slipping; I’m fairly sure that was a given last night. More because 1) it would help me remember what the hell happened, & 2) apparently last night I got drunk enough to acquiesce to Carmen’s request for Heart by singing “Magic Man,” & then go along with Hoax’s request for “Alone” immediately after. And yes, I did the wail before the final chorus.
Seriously, I wish I was there so I could have heard that, good or bad.

Karaoke Review 01-04
First Sunday of the year.
Shortly after opening, 2 surfer chicks walked into the bar, stopped, & with very big smiles looked at me & screamed.
High school girlfriends.
High school girlfriends, who drink tequila.
I had had 2 Sundays in a row of nothing but cool people, & to be honest I didn’t think I could have another lucky night. So as I got ready for work it was with slight apprehension. Tonight couldn’t possibly be another Only Cool People night. That would be asking too much. I don’t deserve it. I’m not good enough.
