Sing Him Away

Filed under: I was there. — Lauren @ 2:30 pm

Twelve years ago I was sprouting new songs in my head like a vegetable garden on a chicken farm. Whatever that means. I was playing guitar every day, transposing the melodies & lyrics that were practically falling out of my head onto notes. When my future ex-husband crashed my house, the day I was laid up from crashing my bike, he found me sitting on the floor of my living room with my Takamine. I hadn’t eaten all day. I was working on this song.

But when I ended up in a band singing covers, that all changed.   It was like my brain dried up.   Sometimes I think now, if I water it with enough tequila or vodka, it’ll become fecund again.   I know, I should be going for the real stuff.   Coleridge would not be impressed.   Recently I had some hope of cancer, which could be like today’s consumption (TB), but that doesn’t look like it’s going to be anything.

Karaoke Review … whatever day this is.

I’m so not in the mood today.

Yesterday was KK’s important, high pressure performance – I was going to tell the story but I actually don’t know specific details… like the name of the piece he sang. If he doesn’t want to add it to the comments or (maybe even) post about it I’ll interrogate him so I can add it here.

Fall At Your Feet

Filed under: Songs that get stuck in my head — odogg32 @ 2:33 pm

The problem I have with cataloging my music is that I get caught up listening to songs that I haven’t heard in awhile, and they get stuck in my head.  That was the case with this song.

I can’t say that I am a huge fan of Crowded House.  I own a couple of albums, but I wouldn’t claim to be an Uber-fan.  I do, however, really like Neil Finn’s songwriting and tone of his voice.  I put him the group of songwriters that I would like to write like.  He’s there along with Dave Matthews, Rivers Cuomo, and Glen Phillips.

The Comfort of Strangers

Filed under: Songs that get stuck in my head, The 80s — Lauren @ 3:10 am

When I was 17 I thought I was losing my mind.   So I took off to California, where I was homeless & quickly penniless & really ridiculously cold.   I slept on Huntington Beach.   I’d fantasized about finding a perch on some frigid coastline, nameless, faceless, & detail-less.   I just wanted to not think so hard, until I died or something.

corralejo-32There’s a curious phenomenon that occurs when I tell Mele at the end of the night that I’ve had enough to drink.   Tequila makes me hyper drunk, & if I’m not physically impaired I don’t necessarily notice right away that I’m drunk.   Usually when I do, it’s a little late.   Then, like a retard, I look at Mele & say, “Dude.   I am fucked up.

He interprets that as:

“Dude. I would like to partake of another ounce & a half of liquor, at least.   In fact, a larger quantity of alcohol would be preferable.   Perhaps an Irish Carbomb.   Perhaps 2 Irish Carbombs.   Yes, I think I would like very much to drink more right now.”

Space Age Love Song

I’ve been doing a lot of 80’s projects for people, compiling a lot of mix CD’s (which is odd for me, considering that back then I was making mix TAPES), so my mind is stuck in the era.  I completely forgot about this song, until I was watching one of my favorite shows on TV, Psych.  The show’s writers are known for throwing in 80’s Pop Culture references throughout the show.  It was featured in the episode about a Roller Derby heist, in case you were curious.  Anyway, without further ado…  Space Age Love Song by A Flock Of Seagulls.

god-listens-to-slayerWMA file of Khorn singing “Ants Marching.”   I really enjoy listening to Khorn sing Dave Matthews because he has so much fun.   Lately he’s been trying out a lot of high range songs but whenever he goes back to his old standards it’s always a pleasure to hear, because he nails it.

I’d characterize this Sunday night as under par singing (none of us were on top of our game this week) & a lot of hilarity, partially in an attempt to overcompensate for a really horrible incident in which Tappy’s bag got snatched by the single stranger in the room.    A young Hawaiian/Samoan guy came in, sat down & ordered a glass of water from me (which he held with a napkin), & then grabbed Tappy’s purse which had been left at her table unattended, & ran out the door to a waiting car, which sped away before any of the guys could get a license plate number.

On The Turning Away

Filed under: I wish I could play like that, The 80s — Lauren @ 9:47 pm

I know it’s sad, but I never really appreciated David Gilmour until this song.

This is a from the latter part of Pink Floyd’s reign, after Roger Waters had already left, & David Gilmour sings vocals & plays the wandering but certainly soulfully rocking guitar solo.   “Learning To Fly,” which is from the same album, has always been my favorite Pink Floyd song, but “On The Turning Away” is probably the song that just pops into my head at random moments.

jukebox-heroOk, I’m not going to lie about it. I got drunk.   I imbibed alcohol.   Yes, it’s true. You don’t have to believe me, but I’m telling you. Thank God I have some recordings. And most of them sound awful.

Well, not this one. Jukebox Hero singing my favorite song for him to sing (this is a wma file & will open in a separate window so you can go on reading, but if you’re on a Mac… sorry).   He sings this song better than the guys who originally recorded it.

At right is a picture from a recent gig by KH & his new band; they played all kinds of good stuff, from “Amanda” to “Green Manalishi.”   Thank God I had earplugs though.   Sheesh.
