Santana: Guitar Heaven

Filed under: Chris Cornell,First listens — Lauren @ 1:54 am

When O-Dogg posted a YouTube recording on September 21st of Chris Cornell singing “Whole Lotta Love” with Santana on Facebook I almost cried.   Or came.   I’m not sure.   I commented “Holy shit.   That was like sex.   Really good sex.”

He then posted a recording of Chris Daughtry singing “Photograph.”   “I already bought it,” I commented. “Another disappointing solo.   What the hell Santana.”   Then there was the recording of Rob Thomas doing “Sunshine Of Your Love.”   I must confess I didn’t really care about that one.   I’d already bought the cd.   I’d listen to it when I had a decent recording.   He then posted Jacoby Shaddix (I don’t know who that is?) doing “Smoke On The Water.”   Really well.   Seriously pushing my buttons.   Very evil, that O-Dogg.

I’d Let Him Entertain Me

Filed under: Robbie Williams — Lauren @ 4:35 pm

Seriously, Robbie Williams is one of my favorite things in the world. I never really noticed his more obvious US hits like “Millenium” or “Angels” until after I had purchased Escapology, which had no US hits on it at all. “Rock DJ” has to be one of my favorite music videos of all time, up there with Foo Fighters’ “Learn To Fly” & Lady GaGa’s “Bad Romance.” When I saw him on MTV’s Cribs, I just fell in love. His little monologue with Mr. Carbohydrate just slew me.

I like funny guys.

A Beautiful End: buy it hoping that music won’t end

I posted this on Twitter last week.   I also bitched about it on Facebook & the discussion that followed was encouraging.   Yay, I’m not the only person with a stick up their ass in regard to stealing music via file sharing.

A Little Change of Scenery

We planned a little live music for this past Sunday night instead of the usual karaoke.   When the Beatles Guy suggested it to T a couple of weeks ago, T was actually not sure I would go for it.   But I thought that was a GREAT IDEA.   We were starting to just do the same old crap every Sunday.   I hadn’t heard my old friend, who I will refer to as Sayasu, play in years.   Since Monday was a holiday that meant that we’d probably see some donkeys wander into the bar, which often meant bad, screaming karaoke.

Some live acoustic, especially from skilled guys like these, was an excellent idea.   Since our place already comes with a live set up (we run the karaoke through a Mackie 808M & the music comes out a pair of wall mounted Mackies), all the guys had to do was come & plug in.   Well, & sound check & whatnot, but we already had the mics, mic stands, cords, etc, lying around.   Even spare guitars.   And a Sunday night clientele of people who are just about all either musicians or music enthusiasts.

It was a great idea.

Euphoria Morning, Part 2

Filed under: Chris Cornell — Lauren @ 3:44 pm

euphoria morningWhen I wrote about Chris Cornell’s Euphoria Morning over a year ago, I thought I was done discovering it.   Apparently I’m not.

For the time being I’ve given up burning compilation CDs of my favorite songs or flavors of the week to listen to in my car because for whatever reason (I suspect a sound quality issue, although you wouldn’t expect that from car audio listening — there is no such thing as good sound quality in a car.   Hm.), I get tired of them after a week or so & then I have to burn another one.    However, original copy CDs seem to stay in my car forever.   It’s just something I noticed, & since I’ve begun listening only to actual albums I’ve actually thrown out a stack of blank Mitsui Golds because they were old.

So, I have a thing for J.R. Richards.

JRRichardsYou guys remember “Counting Blue Cars,” right?   Most of the folks I know, being karaoke bar frequent flyers, will recall it as the song with the cab driver & all the different weirdo fares in the back seat.   I missed out on practically a decade of music videos because of my little tv boycott, & it wasn’t until recently I finally saw the actual video.

I looked it up after viewing “Somewhere In The Middle,” during which I realized, with some startlement, that not only was the lead singer of Dishwalla kind of hot, but he seriously did not have moves.   But it didn’t matter, because he had the most ridiculously sexy voice.

Karaoke Review 04-26

Filed under: Karaoke Diaries — Lauren @ 7:36 pm

bastardsWhen I walked in, Ari was helping T sweep up the carnage left from last night.    T was picking up the mess behind the bar & I could see dried up crap all over the tables, so I started wiping them down.   We’re used to the place looking & smelling like shit every Sunday.   It’s not the Saturday night help; it’s the Saturday night afterparty.   There’s no one to clean up for the afterparty & God knows it’s not going to be them.

T went to one of the restrooms to find that he had a bunch of dried up puke to clean up.   Does he ever have the shitty job some days.
